This Week’s Reflection: When Travel Becomes a Homecoming
Have you ever arrived somewhere for the first time and felt, inexplicably, at home?
A couple of years ago, I spent two weeks travelling around Sicily and was overcome by a strange sense of déjà vu. The streets felt familiar. I felt safe in places others might avoid. I wasn’t chasing the big sights, I just went with what felt right. I lingered in markets, popped into bakeries that smelled amazing, and wandered streets that weirdly felt familiar. This sensation was particularly intense in Palermo where I spent 3 nights and wish I’d stayed longer. Even my husband was amazed at how much I loved every corner of this city which is often overlooked.
Several months later, I took a DNA test which revealed Sicilian roots, something I’d never imagined. No one in my family, as far as I knew, had ever set foot in Italy. Had my body remembered what my mind didn’t?
The best journeys don’t just take us somewhere new. Sometimes, they guide us back to ourselves.
When was your last homecoming?
Mindful Travel Ritual: The 10-Minute Arrival
Before your next trip (or even your next walk around the block), try this:
Pause when you arrive.
Take 10 quiet minutes. No photos. No scrolling.
Tune into the space: the sounds, scents, the temperature, the energy.
Let your body catch up to where your feet have landed.
This simple ritual helps me feel grounded, less like a visitor and more like a participant in place.
What’s Stirring in the Travel World
Starting this summer, British visitors to Spain must present proof of comprehensive private travel health insurance, covering emergency care, hospitalisation, ambulance services, and repatriation, upon arrival. This rule stems from post‑Brexit changes and aims to keep the burden off Spain’s public health system. Fines for non‑compliance can reach £5,950.
Slovenia is launching a digital nomad visa this November, offering remote workers the chance to live and work in one of Europe’s most scenic and affordable countries for up to a year.
Uber Eats is adding a “Dine Out” tab, courtesy of a new partnership with OpenTable, launching this autumn. Users in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Ireland, Australia, and Mexico will soon be able to reserve tables directly through the Uber Eats app, book rides to their reservation at a discounted price, enjoy priority access for Uber One members and more.

Packing tip
Pack by outfit, not by item.
Instead of grabbing your “favourite tops,” pre-plan full looks for each day or activity. It cuts bulk and ensures everything works together.

The Art of Stillness: Adventures in Going Nowhere
by Pico Iyer
In a world obsessed with motion, Iyer makes a compelling case for stillness, not as stagnation, but as an adventure in its own right. This slim, meditative read feels like a soothing balm for the restless traveller, reminding us that some of our most meaningful journeys happen when we pause. Highly recommended for anyone who’s always moving, but longing to arrive.
